Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County, Inc.
The Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County, Inc. is a community coalition that focuses on youth substance abuse and violence prevention– a proactive process which empowers individuals and systems to meet the challenges of life events and transitions by creating and reinforcing conditions that promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
The Safe Climate Coalition (SCC) has addressed youth violence problems within Lake County since 1995. Originally, a concerned Lake County School Board Member joined with community members to organize what was then called the Safe Schools Committee in response to a local tragedy – a middle school shooting. In its early development, the coalition focused primarily on youth violence and delinquency with a smaller emphasis on substance use. In May of 2003, the Safe Schools Committee officially organized into the Safe Climate Coalition, a non-profit, was recognized as an initiative of the Lake County Shared Service Network (LCSSN), and shifted its focus to include reducing and preventing underage drinking and substance use.
The primary purpose of this coalition is to make community-level changes by working collaboratively to analyze the substance abuse problems in the community, assess the resources and gaps, create a prevention plan, implement a variety of activities and strategies in every sector of the community, and evaluate the results of our efforts.
Today the coalition is a data-driven, highly active organization focused on implementing environmental strategies to impact the Lake County community, and reduce and prevent substance abuse and violence among our youth. Community awareness and education: presentations at monthly meetings and community events; Trainings for law enforcement, teachers and stakeholders; Know the Law Project; Sticker Shock Project; Fund 12 SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Chapters at MS & HS; and Started and maintain the Lake County Community Resource Guide (www.lccrg.com).
